Airbnb's 14-day review window, explained

Updated

After an Airbnb stay ends, the guest and the host each have 14 days to write a review. Reviews stay hidden until both have written one or the 14 days are over, and after day 14 the form closes for good, so a guest who forgets simply never reviews.

That last point is why the window matters so much to hosts. Most missing reviews aren't bad experiences; they are guests who meant to review and ran out of time.

How the window works

  1. Checkout. The 14 days start when the stay ends.
  2. Both sides are invited. Airbnb asks the guest and the host to review each other.
  3. Reviews stay hidden. Neither of you can see the other's review while the window is open, unless both have written one.
  4. Reviews go live. As soon as both reviews are in, both are published. If only one side writes a review, it is published when the 14 days end.
  5. The form closes. After day 14, no new review can be written for that stay.

This "double-blind" design exists so that neither side writes a review in reaction to the other. A guest can't see a critical host review and retaliate, and a host can't wait to see what the guest wrote.

What the guest rates

Airbnb asks guests for an overall star rating and ratings on six categories: cleanliness, accuracy, check-in, communication, location and value. Guests can also write a public review and send private feedback to the host. The private note isn't published, but it is often the most useful thing you get.

What happens on day 15

Nothing, and that's the problem. If the guest hasn't reviewed by the end of day 14, the chance is gone. Airbnb says it can't make exceptions to allow reviews after the 14 days.

If the host has written a review and the guest hasn't, the host's review is published on its own at the end of the window.

Why guests miss the window

  • They forget. Life starts again the day after checkout.
  • The prompt gets lost. Airbnb's own reminder sits in an inbox or a notification tray among many others.
  • They mean to do it "later". Later turns into day 16.
  • Nobody asked. A personal request from the host gets more attention than an automated email.

None of these are about the stay. That's why a simple, well-timed reminder makes such a difference.

How to make sure guests don't miss it

1. Review your guest first

Write your review of the guest on checkout day. Guests are told when their host has reviewed them, and they can only read it once they've written their own review or the window ends, which gives them a reason to open the form early.

2. Ask on checkout day, personally

The stay is freshest on the day it ends. Ask how it went first, then ask for the review with the direct link. A short voice note from you on WhatsApp stands out from every automated email.

Hi Ananya, thank you for staying with us! How was everything?

So glad you enjoyed it! If you have a minute, an honest review on Airbnb would mean a lot. Here's the link: {review link}

3. Remind them in the middle of the window

A few days after checkout, send one friendly reminder that picks up where you left off. If they opened the link but didn't finish, just send it again. For a longer stay, a quick friendly call works well too.

Hi Ananya, hope you're home safe and the beach photos came out well! Just a gentle reminder in case it slipped your mind: here's the review link. Thank you!

4. Send a last call before it closes

A day or two before the window ends, one last note is fair, and guests often appreciate knowing there's a deadline.

Hi Ananya, a last quick note: Airbnb closes the review form in a couple of days. If you get a moment, we'd really value hearing how your stay was.

5. Stop as soon as they review

Once the review is in, stop all reminders. Thank them instead.

A simple 14-day plan

When What to send
Checkout day Your review of the guest; "how was your stay?"; the review ask with the link (and a voice note)
Around day 3 to 5 A friendly reminder that picks up where you left off
Around day 7 to 10 The link again if they opened it but didn't finish, or a quick call
Day 13 or so A last, gentle note that the form is about to close
Any time they review Stop reminders, say thank you

That's at most four or five messages over two weeks, stopping as soon as the guest reviews. It reminds without nagging.

If something went wrong during the stay

The window is also your chance to put things right before the review is written. If a guest raised a problem during the stay, or mentions one in their reply to your checkout message, deal with that first:

  1. Reply quickly and thank them for telling you.
  2. Say what you did or will do about it. Be specific: "we've replaced the shower head", not "we'll look into it".
  3. Then ask, honestly. A guest who sees that you listened is far more likely to write a fair review.

Hi Ananya, thanks for telling us about the hot water. We've had the heater replaced, so the next guests won't have the same trouble. Sorry it affected your stay. If you'd like to share your honest feedback on Airbnb, we'd appreciate it.

A calm, specific message like this shows the guest you listened, and that is what they remember when they write.

Good habits

  • Ask every guest for an honest review.
  • Keep it about the stay. A review reminder is part of looking after the guest.
  • Only real stays. If a reservation was cancelled, there's nothing to review.

Other platforms

The 14-day window is Airbnb's. Other platforms set their own windows, so check each one's rules before you plan reminders.

How Prohostings helps

Keeping track of where every guest is in their 14 days, across several homes, is hard by hand. Prohostings' review tracker shows every stay that's still inside Airbnb's window, highlights the ones closing soonest, sends the checkout message and reminders on WhatsApp, and stops when the guest reviews or the window closes. Try the free review report to see how many recent guests can still review.

FAQ

How long does a guest have to review on Airbnb?

14 days after checkout. After that, the review form closes and the guest can no longer leave a review for that stay.

When does an Airbnb review become visible?

When both the guest and the host have written their reviews, or when the 14-day window ends, whichever comes first.

Can a guest leave a review after 14 days?

No. Once the window has closed, Airbnb doesn't accept a review for that stay.

Can the guest see my review before writing theirs?

No. Reviews stay hidden until both are written or the window ends, so neither side can react to the other's review.

Is it okay to remind a guest during the 14 days?

Yes. A friendly reminder or two, each picking up from your last message, is fair. Ask for an honest review and stop once they have reviewed.
